When the coronavirus pandemic hit Boston, we knew we had to meet the challenge of tracking this virus. Diagnostic capacity was quickly built up to test people with symptoms. In order to support public health efforts to track asymptomatic spread, we scaled a program for communities across America: Concentric by Ginkgo, testing every student in America, every week.
A NATIONAL EFFORT
Concentric by Ginkgo is Ginkgo’s public health and biosecurity effort. We came together with the goal of providing testing capacity to every school in America looking to operate in-person or hybrid learning . To meet this demand, we built partnerships with dozens of labs across the country, creating a diverse national network of professionals and facilities with the technical excellence and operational capacity to process testing tens of millions of tests. Students, parents, teachers, nurses, and administrators across the country – from Baltimore to Newark – came together to build up norms and comfort around regular testing, banding together to defend their community’s health.
EVERYBODY'S HEALTH IS CONNECTED
As tens of millions of students and teachers are working to come back to the classroom, Concentric by Ginkgo is ready to work alongside them: an easy-to-implement system that states, cities, and districts across the country adopted. Schools became hubs for community health, producing regular information for families to understand the true prevalence of COVID in their communities, interrupting potential chains of spread and building confidence around in-person learning. As we moved from serving dozens of schools enrolled in our pilots to supporting hundreds through city-, county- and state-wide programs, we connected with policymakers and public health leaders to share insights about how to implement testing nationally.
BUILDING BACK BETTER WITH BIOLOGY
We built Concentric by Ginkgo because everybody’s health is connected. This profound truth about our biology will remain true even after we emerge from under the shroud of this deadly pandemic. The infrastructure we’ve built to run COVID testing – in Massachusetts, in California, and with our partners across the country – can support national tracking of viruses and biological threats for decades to come. If we’re prepared for the next pandemic, we can stop it before it even starts.
